Students of Asia University Win the Awards of the 2020 AI CUP Hosted by the Ministry of Education for Two Executive Years
Six students from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at Asia University (AU), Chi-An Chen, Ying-Chen Lin, Min-Chi Yang, Bo-Han Li, Yi-Teng Yu, and Guan-Yao Wang, participated in the National Artificial Intelligence Competition for Colleges and Universities, called AI CUP, hosted by the Ministry of Education. They stood out from more than 4,000 participants in the “Aven Mango Image Recognition” competition item of the 2020 AI CUP and won an award. Chi-An Chen won the No. 5 place, and the group of Ying-Chen Lin, Min-Chi Yang, Bo-Han Li, Yi-Teng Yu and Guan-Yao Wang won the No. 6 place.
Professor Yu-Jie Li, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Board of Science and Technology, Executive Yuan, said in a speech on behalf of the Executive Yuan that the government is promoting a number of AI policies, and the cultivation of AI talents is the most important part; the students who participated in this AI competition are all important AI talents in the future.
Shan-Min Han, a senior planner of the Department of Information and Technology Education at the Ministry of Education, said that it is worth noting that more and more of the winners of the competition are not students from information and electrical Engineering colleges, showing that the students other than those from the information and engineering departments of various colleges are also paying more and more attention to AI technology. The planner said that he hopes students in all fields can devote themselves to learning AI and become talents in interdisciplinary fields.
Prof. Zong-Han Tsai, who hosted the artificial intelligence competition, said that the AI CUP award certificates granted by the Ministry of Education have all been certified by the blockchain of the Turing Certificate Platform and will never be tampered with. In the future, students who apply for jobs with this certificate will be recognized by the companies, being helpful definitely to the career development of the students.
Prof. Hsueh-Ting Chu, a professor of the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at AU, pointed out that he guided the students who participated in the Aven Mango Image Recognition Competition to apply AI to agriculture, encouraging students to exercise AI image recognition skills and use AI to classify agricultural products. Furthermore, to alleviate the problem of farmers’ lack of manpower in Taiwan, they look forward to utilize the automation and precision characteristics of AI technology into agriculture to increase the production capacity and added value. Certainly, similar techniques can also be applied to industrial production lines, such as checking the defective rate of motherboards.
Prof. Chu said that the students of the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering also won awards of the AI CUP competition of the Ministry of Education last year. The department was hoped by the school to promote the participation in this competition to all the students in the “AI elite class” at AU, expecting eventually that all AU students can participate in the AI elite class for competition training, and then participate and win in the AI CUP competition of the Ministry of Education afterwards.
