In the 2017 RedDot Award report, 13 artworks from 33 students of the Visual Communication Design (VCD) Dept. and the Digital Media Design (DMD) Dept. of Asia University (AU) have entered the winner list. Two of them, “Neiwan Love Story” and“Taiwan Old-street Chinese Characters” win the “Best of the Best” Awards, and the designers of the artworks will attend the RedDot Awarding Ceremony in October.
It is noted that AU master student Jing-Wei Liu from the VCD Dept. wins RedDot Awards for three consecutive years. Specifically, a work of his, entitled “Moss,” has won the RedDot Design Award from Germany in this year’s contest. And it is worth emphasizing that Jing-Wei Liu has surprisingly won a total of 30 awards of international design contests held in USA, UK, Belgium, Germany, etc. What a great talent of design!
The vice dean of the Creative Design College and the chair of the VCD Dept. at AU, Prof. Sheng-Min Hsien, mentioned that the German RedDot Award is regarded as the “Academy Award” in the design circle in the world, and that students and expert designers from 50 countries over the world with a total of about 8000 artworks competed in the contest this year. “Totally 30 artworks created by AU students participated the contest with 11 awarded,” said Prof. Hsieh, “and in the recent six years, a total of 65 artworks from AU have been granted RedDot Awards, among which 13 won the “Best of the Best” Awards.”

The first “Best of the Best” RedDot-awarded work “Neiwan Love Story” is designed by students, Tzu-Yen Huang, Ya-Ching Chiang, Hsiao-Yun Su and Ya-Chien Chang, from the VCD Dept. at AU. The work includes innovative designs of slogans, DMs, posters, guide books, as well as related APPs for use on smart phones, all aiming at promoting the propaganda of six scenic spots in the historical countryside of Neiwan in Hsinchu County, Taiwan
The second “Best of the Best” RedDot-awarded work “Taiwan Old-street Chinese Characters” is designed by students, Sheng-Hsuan Huang and Cheng-Yu Wu, from the VCD Dept. at AU. The work includes clever artistic designs of Chinese characters describing the three famous sightseeing spots, Half-sided Well, Nine-turns Lane, and Shih-Yih Hall, all located in Lukang in the Changhua County, Taiwan. In addition, the designs are transformed into posters for use to attract tourists to come to Lukang for sightseeing and shopping.
The remaining award-winning works include: (1) a set of graphic drawings with the title “Everymomday” depicting relations between a mother and her children, which is designed by students Jui-Yu Yang, etc. from the VCD Dept. at AU and is already published on the LINE platform with a very large number of downloads; and (2) a very interesting PC game entitled Piper with contents related to fairy tales, which is designed by students Yi-Hsuan Hsu, etc. from the DMD Dept. at AU.
As a summary, the award-winning works of this year from AU are diversified in topics, including poster, package design, image design, digital animation, etc., showing the versatile abilities of the AU students of the design-related departments, as well as the fruitful teaching achievements of the Creative Design College at AU!
